HISTORY OF PARK
Humans have been in contact with the Shenandoah area for over 11,000 years. Native Americans used the lands, but left little trace of their presence. Then, in the 18th century, settlers moved into the area and started to destroy the land. They were cutting down forests, overusing the rich, natural soil for farming, and overhunting the wildlife. People began to purchase the land in order to extract valuable resources, such as copper and lumber. The land was leading to a point of destruction where there is no returning to its natural beauty and health. The government finally realized the beauty in the park, and congress decided to make it a national park. It is preserved for the land and the wildlife. The land was finally saved.
